Gov. Signs Bill Allowing Motorcycle Sales On Sundays
BERN TWP., Pa. -- Another Pennsylvania blue law bites the dust. And some motorcycle dealers said it will mean green for them. Governor Tom Corbett signed 46 bills into law Thursday, including one that allows people to buy motorcycles on Sundays. If you're a biker Sunday is when you can hit the road.
"If you're out on a Sunday and you're riding around that bike you're on is just feeling a little old a little sluggish. That's the time you're going to think of and be ready to buy," said Kevin Kodz, owner of Classic Harley Davidson in Bern Township.
But in PA that hasn't been possible. Classic Harley Davidson is open on Sundays to sell clothes and parts, but they've had to break the bad news to customers who wanted to pick up a new ride. "We have to educate them, there's still Pennsylvania blue laws we can't sell bikes on Sundays," said Kodz.
Governor Tom Corbett changed that when he signed a new law Thursday allowing Sunday motorcycle sales. "Power sport sales we really need it," said Kodz, "It's a leisure business. You don't need a motorcycle. You want one. So we need to be able to sell whatever days that we can."
But Mike Miller, the co-owner at Ray's Yamaha in Exeter Township said tradition is more important to him than selling on Sundays.
"With us being from Pennsylvania our whole life and Pennsylvania Dutch in our heritage we believe in Sundays as a day of worship or a day of relaxation," said Miller, "And we use the products we actually physically sell."
Miller said on Sunday he'd rather ride his Victory than sell one. "Life isn't all about making money," said Miller.
He said there will be pressure to change the closed sign to an open one. But he won't do it. "It's affecting maybe our bottom line. We could make a few more dollars, but how much am I affecting everybody else's life by making them work Sundays and taking them away from their family," said Miller.
"If you by choice don't want to be open that's fine," said Kodz, "But the law shouldn't say I have to be open on these hours or I have to closed on these hours."
