The second annual Independence Track Day was a huge success! Pat and I ran Summit last 4th of July, it was 100 degrees and we still had a great time. It was cooler this time, but not much. It was about 10 degrees cooler, but the humidity almost made up for the relatively cooler temps.

Pat and I drove out Sunday evening, made it to the hotel by 9:30 PM and were at the track to set up by 6:30 AM. We located Mike's (Madski) pits and set up next to him. The track was still a bit damp in places for the 1st session so I took it even easier than usual to start. I worked up to a decent pace by the end of the session and finished knocking the rust off in the 2nd session. One thing I changed from the last time I was there was that I started down-shifting to 2nd gear for turn #1 instead of 3rd gear. This meant I had to up-shift to 3rd with the bike leaned over going up the hill, but I do believe it's faster.

My previous best lap at Summit was a 1:24.00 so I was hoping to get into the 1:23's. I was feeling pretty good during the 3rd session and thought I was moving pretty quickly (for me). My lap timer agreed as I made it down into the 1:23's for 3 laps with a best of 1:23.77. It's pretty cool when you can go into the lunch break already running faster than you have before!

The session after lunch was another good one as I got into some fast traffic that towed me around the track. I got back into the 1:23's for 2 laps and also ran a 1:22.95. I did notice that my rear tire was moving around a good bit though. By Bacola standards my rear tire still had a lot of rubber on it and I wasn't sure I wanted to swap it out just yet. Looking at the lap-timer I could see that I ran the 1:22.95 on the 2nd lap and my times pretty much when up from there. Time to put on a fresh rear.

Pat needed to change his rear out as well and got started while I was still trying to decide if I was going swap mine. Like I said before, it was pretty hot and humid. In my experience very little air typically moves around in the Summit pits and today was no exception. It really wasn't bad out on the bike, but when you roll off the track, your heart-rate's up and then you loose that 70 - 150 MPH breeze, things heat up pretty quickly. Getting those tires changed in that heat really put the wood to me. It was just really busy between the 4th and 5th sessions, with the tire changes, filling my bike up with fuel, getting the GoPro on, it just felt like my heart-rate never came down from the previous session. I did drink at least 32 oz of PowerAde between each session, which I think saved me from a total melt down.

I went out in the 5th and 6th sessions with a fresh rear tire and went slower than I had on the shagged rear. I got into the 1:23's for 3 laps in the 5th session with a best of 1:23.66 and 2 laps in the 6th session with a best of 1:23.69. I felt like I was riding pretty well, but it was probably the combo of fatigue and the heat.

Unlike me, Pat went out and went faster on the fresh rear tire right away, as did Mike who ended up swapping his out 20 minutes after Pat and I when his I session ended.

Mike came in feeling pretty good after the 6th session. Jiggy had towed him around into the 1:24's and had asked where he was pitted. Sure enough, Mike got the bump to A and went out with Pat and I for the last session. I must have gotten my second wind for the last session as I made it into the 1:23's for 6 laps and the 1:22's for 2, with a best of 1:22.59. It's always nice to end the day on a high note! It sounded like Mike had fun during his first A session and even made a couple passes!

One thing I did notice was that my coolant temp seemed to be higher that usual, even considering the warm weather. On a street ride I'm usually at around 176 - 178 degrees. I noticed my temp was at 212 degrees at the end of the back straight. I would expect with the 150 mph breeze going through the rad, it would be cooler than that? It seemed that when we pulled off the track my coolant temp was higher than Pat's GSXR and it's usually the other way around. I'm going to keep an eye on it, but anything I should check in the mean time?

Promises, promises. I get bumped and you skip out on the A session - coincidence? I think not

Mike - nice work on the A sticker!

Don't want to sidetrack the thread too much, but you mentined the new avatar over on scpmc and yes, I thought I made some decent progress on Sat at Jefferson. We had a very low turnout (no A's at all) and got 7x30min less crash cleanup. Didn't get to see much of the racing as the down time was just that - resting up for the next session! Did get some good and slightly different coaching from the NESBA CR's vs TPM. Still need to work on consistency between corners (pics are from the slowest corner on the track) and the lap times still have a long way to go (my best was ~68), but definitely a good, fun day.
