Never really thought about this since I was going through bikes like my SO goes through shoes but now that I've found the "one I love" just wondering how often shocks/forks need work - like how many track days?

You should have them serviced every season. I had the forks done prior to barber in Nov and then the shock when I got back. If you plan to do 30 days then twice, but 12-15 or so should be good for once a season. Just don't send it out in March and expect a quick turn around as most people tend to procrastinate. Penske is offering a special for NESBA members right now

I was told at my first trackday that the fluids should be changed at least once a year for the average trackday rider. Racers of coures more frequently.

Changing fork fluid is easy as long as you have your service manual and set the nut on the rod to the correct measurement when you reassemble (if you don't then you'll have less than your normal adjustment - I had to learn the hard way).

Changing my shock fluid is done by racetech...they replace the fluid and recharge the shock for around $100.

I do it once a season...or when I notice that I cannot get the correct rebound or compression settings for what I want the bike to do.

my current stuff has just 3 days on it so we'll see how many days i get in in '10 and i'll probably send them in at the end of next season.

I bought this stuff and do my own forks;

That's not too bad. I may go that route too, I've done forks before but never inverted cartrige like my current ones. Last set I did was for an SV (frank's). Did not kill him and he was happy as a pig in shit with them so I must have gonnet it right :-)

Nitrogen charged shocks are probably a bit much to DIY...

I had Racetech put a recharge cap with shrader valve on the shock so I could rebuild it, but I can't find anything on how to rebuild it or how much to recharge the nitrogen to afterwards.

Ohh well.

A friend of mine has a shop here in TN and he does a lot of dirtbike suspensions and drag bikes, he also sponsored a supermoto team last year and a few more previous. I can ask him about the N2 pressure for ya. And if you guys want I can post up a link to his website, but it doesn't have a lot of stuff on it besides contact info. He is a stand up guy and would do you right on refreshing your stuff.

steve, so long as you are not profiting from posting a vendor's site and info - there are no issues with you doing so.
if the guy is a stand up business post his info, sort of the point of this board to provide good info by track riders/racers to other track riders/racers :thumbup:

thanks for the thought, but I don't plan on doing it myself even if I did have the pressures...More tooling is needed and right now it's not worth the extra cost too me...if I was doing more than just my own i'd buy the tooling and do it. Racetech is isn't too bad for a rebuild so i'll just continue using them once a year.
