On a track/race only bike that is - how far do you let them go before replacing? Enough to say pass (state) inspection or less (or more)?

I don't go that far down BUT if you look at Matts brakes the last time at CMP they were really donw to a minimum and he is way better than me on the brakes.

I imagine it's a personal thing,if you feel like it's starting to fad consistantly I would say change them.

I mainly go by the wear bars. If the wear bars are gone and there is still pad and you only have a session or two, you'll be fine.

And definitely check them, don't depend on the tech inspection to do it for you. As much as I love Lenny, and appreciate him letting me through tech, he warned me my brake pads were getting low but passed me anyway. After I got home I pulled out the pads and had absolutely no pad left. Surprised I did not destroy my rotors from metal-on-metal. So learn from me, do your due diligence and check them regularly (this is for everyone, not for Mike since he is more anal about his bike than most people).

I need to pull the calipers and take a closer look. They are getting close to the end of their useful lives.
I really wish Vesrah made pads for my bike. Their pads I had in the Gix were phenominal. I have CL's in there now and I'm hardly in love.

Anyone have any suggestions while we're at it?

Those pads at CMP were much thinner than I expected. IIRC they were brand new when we did the 2 CMP days in November, I did 1 more CMP day in Feb, 1 CMP day in March and had to replace them halfway through our 2nd March CMP day. So they didn't last a full 5 CMP track days. I expected them to last longer, but CMP is hell on brakes (and tires).

As with tires, I try to run my brake pads for as long as I can. Unless they are completely shagged, I keep the old pads in my tool box. I try to keep a brand new set of brake pads in my tool box, but some times in a pinch, swapping out a pad or two with "take offs" can get you through the rest of your track day (which is what I did in CMP).
