I'm not sure if this problem affects any other make/model besides the 02-03 Yamaha R1 but we all eventually have a failure of the stator coils melting on this model. It's all over the R1 Forum. Anyway, I have a word of advice and a tool that made the job alot easier. Yamaha with all it's wisdom decided to run a rotor onto the crank instead of using a simple bolt design and attaching it that way. Well I used a 2 ton 3 jaw puller, a 5 ton 3 jaw puller and impact guns with absolutely no success w/ or w/o heat. In the end using a M16X1.50 Pushing Bolt with TONS of heat popped this sucker off. No one had a this size / thread bolt anywhere that I could find and I had to order it from Fastenal in order to get one. So long/short if anyone runs into this situation and needs this pusher bolt let me know...I spent 2 weeks without a working bike and it sucks, wouldn't want someone else to miss out on two weeks if they don't have to. |

I'm still trying to figure out if it's related to anything else. Most people on the R1 forum experience this at 15-20K miles. Mine lasted 35K miles...it was about 1 month after changing the battery for the first time. I figured a 6 year old battery was going to die in this summers heat so changed it. My theory, take it for what it's worth, is that a brand new battery must require more current when charging so there was more current draw from the stator coils than a older battery that wasn't holding 13.5V+. After the 35K miles the insulation was probably broken down and it could not take the extra heat and eventually melted the insulation shorting the windings together. I don't know that's just my makeshift theory...my battery could have just be a coincidence

not a bad theory... btw, 675's burn these things up on a regular basis so Silv my have an interest in your services soon enough  apparently it's a lot easier on the trumpet though (unlike everything else).

Mike Thanks for the heads up, right now im going to deal with this bike as it comes. Had it down at karns last night for the suspension setup and he was pretty impressed with the bike. Plus my buddy who i bought it off of took good care of it, so any problems i run into he gives me a hand not to mention he has everytool snap on makes ha ha. |

didn't take it that way at all, im just one not to worry about it till it becomes an issue. I will take your advice on the cam chain tensioner though and i will be ordering one soon. I would be pissed too Did you get my pm??? |
