So after being at the Karn's open house tonight and watching the dyno tune, I was looking at Power Commander's. I have no clue about air/fuel mixtures and what not, so I have no clue as to exactly what I would need to buy if I wanted to put one of these on my bike. They have the power commander, ignition module, shift rod, LCD display, etc.

So whats the deal on all of this??

You think you need more power out of your bike?

Start with the PC and a good tune from Karns. Ignition module may give you a few more horses and will let you use DJ's quick shifter if you like.

I'd talk to Jason and see what he says.

I don't know if I need more power or if I'll even buy one. Just figured I'd look into them and see what they were all about.

PC's don't hurt and with a good tune and corresponding mods they are worth a few HP. A good tune even on a stock bike can have some benefits.

I got around 15 HP on my R1 with a full system, bmc (probably worth nothing), and PCIII with Jason's tune. Also a smoother power curve and better responciveness over all.

Yeah, I think my bike just needs a good go over. Maybe I'll drop it off at Karns and get that done this winter. I still need to take a look at my clutch and see what kind of issues it was giving me.

I lucked out...I was in the same boat as you figured I never needed one.

Well a close friend totalled his R1 and bought a newer R1 so asked that I do his tire changes for the next year pro-bono and I can have the PC.

I put it on and downloaded a map that is really close to my bike.

The results - well I don't know if it gained more horse power but I tell you it eliminated the 6-7K rpm dip, make the bike smoother and it feels like it has more pep. When I compared the map to the zero map, it actually reduces fuel, so from the factory yamaha runs it rich. Talking to Jason from Karns i'll probably be investing into dyno time and custom tune.

the only way to tell if the afr is correct it to put it on a dyno that can test for it. we do this with torque and afr for 60 and if it isnt correct and you schedule a custom map we apply the 60 toward the session. online maps are almost never correct. some are "close" from a seat of the pants feel. we have had many customers that have purchased powercommanders online with custom maps... one customer that went this route gained 13hp @ 8k and 6hp @10,500 he also picked up 8mpg after we fixed the custom map (retuned the bike). The down loaded maps from the dynojet website are created at their las vegas location witch are pobably ok if you live in the desert with 2% humidity but most of the time they are fairly rich all around. there are always gains to be had. we only charge 295 for a brand new pc3 and if you also get it tuned 275 we install for free. the igniton module i dont normaly recommend unless you want to use a quick shifter or for other reasons. to much cash for the gains. i dont belive in wasting money. STAY AWAY FROM THE LCD DISPLAY.
