do you wear a helmet when you ride? if so what kind? any recommendations/things to look for in a helmet?

Yeah, I always wear one. I've been down bouncing along the pavement at 30mph or so it's not a lot of fun (especially since your gloves and helmet are your only "safety" gear).
Cycling helmets are much like motorcycle helmets: The more you spend the less it will weigh and the better it will vent. My last few have been Giro's and I can't complain.
For gear make sure you get a few pairs of good quality shorts (I like Descente and Pearl Izumi), good shoes (I like Sidi), good gloves (your hands will thank you, I like Pearl Izumi gels), jerseys, good Helmet and good glasses (non-glass lenses and reasonably tight fit to your face to keep the shit out of your eyes).
You will also need pedals, bikes don't come with them from the factory. I like SpeedPlay.
You will need a tail bag with at least the following items: CO2 Inflator and a spare cartrige or two, patch kit, tube, tire levers.
You will also need a bottle cage (should have 2) and bottles. A cyclecomputer is good to have so you know how far you rode, at what speeds, etc. Being an old fart I wear a heart monitor as well.
I don't know if you have a pump at home that works with Presta valves (different from your car/motorcycle) and capable of 120psi or so.
This shit gets really ugly really quickly so far as $$$ go....

I've been reading mike's recomendations and agree with almost all of them. The part about helmets is very true. I've crashed several times when I was racing and even once on a group ride and everytime my helmet took a beating. Without it my head would have been the thing gettng the beating.
As far as bicycles go I have ridden trek and specialized. I liked both. It isn't a cheap sport done right, but it is a great sport for keeping you in excellent shape for whatever you want to do. It has allowed me, at my over the hill age, to do a reasonable job of riding a sportbike at the track.

paul- i ended up getting a leftover 2008 Felt F85 for 850 from a local shop. has shimano 105 and ultegra componets. gotta get all the other gear and stuff yet but hoping to keep it around 1500 bucks for everything which makes my wallet feel good for just getting into this

Sounds like a great setup to me. In many ways most reasonably priced equipment will do just fine. The most important thing is getting something that fits your body structure. A poor fitting $6000 bike is not going be as good as a proper fitting $1000 bike. Just have someone who knows what they are doing help you get the bike adjusted for you. Bike setup is very important.
